Romantic cello by candlelight

Saturday 12th December
19:30 – Concert begins

Bridge – Cello Sonata
Saint-Saëns – The Swan (from Carnival of the Animals)
Chopin – Cello Sonata in G minor

Join cellist Chris Grist and pianist Daniel Grimwood for three beautiful works featuring the cello. Frank Bridge’s neglected work, written between 1913 and 1917 in the backdrop of the First World War, retains much of the tonal style present in his pre-War music but features unexpected mood changes than hint at the radical transformation his compositional style would undertake. By contrast, Saint-Saëns’ beguiling depiction of a swan has become an audience favourite through its ephemeral beauty. The programme concludes with Chopin’s wonderful Cello Sonata, one of the last works he published before his death, and one of the very few works that Chopin ever wrote that featured an instrument that wasn’t the piano!
